There have been two high-profile leadership changes in the world of TV news -- the suspension of Brian Williams from NBC News in the wake of scandal, plus Jon Stewart's announced retirement from The Daily Show.

What if you were asked to replace either one?

Whether you enter into a crisis (like at NBC) or a calmer, planned transition (like at Comedy Central), there are aspects of successful transition that all new leaders should follow, especially when replacing a veteran leader.

For advice, I turned to Pat Nichols, president of Transition Leadership International to get an insider perspective.
