Why doing what you are told will ruin your career

The CEO looked at me from across the conference table, a pained expression on his face. "Don’t get me wrong, John’s a great guy. He’s honest, hardworking, and heaven knows he’s been with us for a long time …"

His voice trailed off and he looked out the window, fully aware that his next sentence would end a man’s career. "But he’s just doing what I ask of him. He never brings me anything new.

He never recognizes a problem unless I point it out. He’s just not the guy to lead us to the next level, In fact, he’s holding us back."

And there was. Another honest, hardworking executive ruined his career by playing it safe and doing what he was told. Everyone in the conference room knew that John was going to have a tough time finding his next job, and would likely never match his current salary.
